The job:

Thermo Fisher Scientific are currently recruiting for a Business Development Manager (BDM) to join our Research Services team, selling outsourced services including:

  • Cell Line Development
  • Crispr Gene Editing
  • Stem Cell Services
  • Protein Expression
  • 3D cell models
  • Viral production
  • Peptide and Antibodies

As BDM, you will have the chance to make a difference in science. You will serve as a driver of our custom services portfolio, demonstrating scientific expertise and growing adoption of the portfolio with a strong focus on the Pharma/Biotech sector, gaining share from competition, as well as maintaining the existing business. As a technical leader within the sales force, you will have a proven track record in life science sales and a deep technical understanding of the subject matter. Our ideal candidate will combine empathy, energy and exude entrepreneurial spirit, engaging customers to partner long-term. You will also be a hunter with gravitas and a passion for science.

This is a field-based role with a sales territory covering the UK, Nordics, Spain, Italy & South Africa. You will be on the road, travelling to meet with customers c.3-4 days per week (up to 75% of working time), with regular overnight stays required. Candidates can be based anywhere in the UK, ideally close to a large city and international airport.

What will you do?


  • Implement a commercial sales plan to secure and grow large research service contracts with Pharma/Biotech clients to achieve growth
  • Promote and market the Research Services portfolio internally and externally
  • Deliver technical presentations and sell services solutions across client-led workflows
  • Engage internal and external collaborators crafting a network of high-value clients and longer term partnerships
  • Maintain a practical strategic business plan for the territory ensuring delivery of revenues to plan on a quarterly basis
  • Apply a solid understanding of Professional, Consultative, and Strategic Selling skills to maintain existing business, develop incremental business in existing accounts, and conduct cold calls to develop new business
  • Demonstrate use of selling skills in the field, such as making good opening statements, connecting with the customer, asking high gain questions, crafting the value proposition and closing
  • Communicate key competitive activities, market trends, changing customer needs, development plans and priorities
  • Provide a revenue report out & forecast by month to the relevant commercial leaders

Who we are looking for:

  • Degree in a Life Science (ideally Cell or Molecular Biology) - Masters/PhD level preferred
  • Deep knowledge of the outsourcing workflow and technologies for early discovery services; ideally you will be working in a CRO or Biotech company that sells services or sophisticated scientific products to the Life Science sector
  • Minimum 2 years sales experience within Life Sciences sector, with experience of sophisticated negotiations at C suite level
  • Expertise in collaborator management, with ability to build key scientific and commercial relationships
  • Entrepreneurial attitude with drive for growth and dedication to providing an outstanding customer experience
  • Fluent in English
  • Clean UK driving licence
  • Flexible and willing to travel up to 75% of working time within your territory, including regular overnight stays
