These roles represent fantastic opportunities to develop both generic and speciality specific clinical skills.

All PAs have weekly CPD time, access to teaching and the support of a Consultant Lead as well as robust clinical and educational supervision from a named consultant.

Our PAs have access to bespoke appraisal via our SARD software.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is expected:

  • To exercise a high degree of personal autonomy when assessing, managing and planning care for a caseload of patients in the department.
  • To develop extensive specialist knowledge and experience, acting as a resource to the medical and nursing teams and allied health professionals.
  • To work collaboratively as part of the multi-disciplinary team,
  • To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
  • To become involved in the wider activities of the department including governance, teaching and audit
  • To act as an ambassador for the Physician Associate role at local and external meetings
  • To participate annually in the appraisal process
  • To be able to work well under the pressures that being in a busy geriatric setting can bring.

Working for our organisation

We are looking to recruit a new team members to join us in our exciting and developing Physician Associate workforce. The Physician Associate is a member of the multi-disciplinary team, including Consultants, Junior Doctors and nursing staff in the delivery of a high quality, patient centred service. You will participate in all aspects of the patient pathway and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge.

As a PA, you will assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend treatment. The role requires you to liaise with other professions and services as required and complete all appropriate documentation for their patients.

You will be supervised by a designated consultant who will oversee your professional development.

It is envisaged that the role will develop flexibly over time in accordance with the post holder’s clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Contribute to patient care, exercising a high level of professional judgment and expertise when delivering This will include:
    • Taking medical histories
    • Undertaking physical examinations
    • Ordering appropriate investigations
    • Interpreting investigation findings
    • Making a differential diagnosis
    • Making recommendations as to appropriate treatment
    • Fully documenting all aspects of patient care and completing all associated paperwork according to Trust and local policies and

  • Perform diagnostic / therapeutic procedures, subject to training and experience / competence. This may include:
  • Venepuncture
  • Cannulation
  • Arterial Blood gases
  • Arterial line insertion
  • Injections
  • ECG
  • Urethral catheterisation (male and female)
  • Naso-gastric tube insertion
  • Lumbar Puncture
  • Talking to patients and relatives / carers with regard to the patient’s condition and treatment

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain specialist medical knowledge
  • Keep up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice
  • Contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care for patients in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines
  • Support the development of the NUH Physician Associate Programme, including PA student placements
  • Be accountable for care given and comply with the Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard as established by the UK Managed Voluntary register for Physician Maintain membership in good standing of the PA managed voluntary register (or such other register as may replace it)
  • Work at all times within the framework of the scope of professional practice
  • Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completion of discharge summaries
  • Develop and maintain effective networks with other departments and specialties, working together to ensure patient flow through the hospital
  • Maintain knowledge and skills in medical practices through appropriate continuing professional development
  • Take an active role in departmental audit and governance activity
  • Where appropriate, teach and train junior doctors and medical students rotating into the specialty

  • Works in partnership with the existing senior medical, nursing and AHP teams in driving departmental development and

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

    • BSc level Degree prior to undertaking PA programme
  • PG Diploma or Masters in Physician Associate Studies from a UK training programme (or equivalent)
  • Valid certification of Physician Associate National Exam (can apply if awaiting results of National Exam or due to sit in the near future)
  • Valid certification of Physician Associate Revalidation Exam (if applicable)
  • Full membership at the Faculty of Physician Associates at the RCP (or proof of awaiting membership to be finalised)
  • Registration with the UK Managed Voluntary Register (FPA MVR or proof awaiting to be finalised)

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Clinical training and experience in general medicine
  • Experience of teaching
  • Experience of audit.

  • Ability to work flexibly across different locations and multi-task when necessary, including as required out of hours work.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
