Job description
Are you interested in developing and delivering projects to make our communities across Devon and Cornwall more resilient to flooding and adapt to climate change?

In this role you will be using data to assess the flood and coastal risks to communities and developing solutions to better manage these risks. The approach to which solutions are appropriate will be wide ranging, including working with nature-based solutions, flood defences and property flood resilience measures, amongst others. By working with community groups and other organisations you will be able to determine where investment is appropriate and develop solutions which provide multiple benefits. In developing tactical solutions, you will work with our asset management teams to ensure that projects are safe and efficient to operate and maintain over their lifetime.

As you work through the issues and potential solutions you will consider what is affordable and viable through Flood Defence Grant in Aid fundable projects and create assessments which present the options, which could be engineering, or nature based.

Project delivery is also an important part of the role, where you will be part of the project team working through the challenges of delivering our flood risk management projects.
The team
You will be part of the Project, Development and Delivery team focusing on delivering Environment Agency flood and coastal risk management projects, which is one of our new area Partnership and Strategic Overview teams.

The team works across Devon and Cornwall, and has close links with our Asset Management teams. These links help translate our strategic intent into viable schemes for our communities, some of which are already protected by our existing flood risk infrastructure.
Experience/skills required
Qualified to at least degree standard or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, with several years’ experience of working with flood and coastal erosion risk management projects.

Specifically:

  • Good track record of solving flood and coastal risk management problems to deliver viable projects
  • An understanding of flood risk management data
  • Experience in project appraisal, design and construction
  • Be inquisitive and innovative
  • Strong team spirit, self-motivated, and a positive, can-do, proactive attitude
  • Excellent communication and influencing experience, skills and approach. You need to build and maintain strong networks internally and externally to deliver sustainable results and work with people to adapt to a changing climate.

  • Application of GIS and IT systems to collate, analyse and present data and evidence.

  • Share our passion to support climate resilient places by managing river and sea flooding, and creating a cleaner healthier environment that benefits people and the economy.
