Climate pressures and growth have seen the number of environmental incidents increase over recent years. This is against a backdrop of financial pressures and increased expectations from the public, media and environmental pressure groups. We need to adapt to meet these challenges and you will be part of a team looking to address these issues.
The role involves leading on improvements to help reduce the risk of environmental incidents from happening. You will deliver the new Environment Incident Risk Reduction Roadmap and implement the supporting tactical plan. You will act as Secretariat of the newly formed Environment Incident Risk Reduction Group. Working closely with colleagues across the business, particularly Incident Management and Resilience, you will support delivery of the Incident Management Service. Working collaboratively across teams you will promote joint, cross directorate work on environment incidents to ensure its valued by all.
You will also play a key part in horizon scanning for future emerging environmental risks and use this information to assess impacts on the environment to influence policy, help plan our incident response and inform our regulatory responses.

The team

The post sits in the national Environment Incident Team, within the Environment & Business Directorate. We work with others across the business to promote environment incident risk reduction work at the sites and activities we regulate. We also analyse data and are exploring potential projects and funding options to reduce serious incidents from unpermitted sites and activities.

We are a dispersed team and you will need to be comfortable working virtually via MS Teams.

Experience/skills required

You will:

  • have a good knowledge of environmental incident management and/or environmental regulation with an understanding of the challenges we face in this area
  • be able to work on your own initiative
  • have a passion for analysing information and solving problems, showing excellent attention to detail
  • have exceptional organisational skills to meet deadlines and prioritise workloads
  • have experience of influencing at a senior level and delivering results
  • be able to shape new approaches, translating strategic ideas into tactical actions and initiating change, ideally with examples of demonstrating success at a national level
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate technical issues to a range of audiences
  • be able to work in ‘virtual teams’ to deliver outcomes with people across the organisation.
