Your New Role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Highways Maintenance Operative with driving license category C1 (7.5 ton)/HGV to join our Kent County Council account in Aylesford.

The starting salary for this position is £11 up to £14 per hour depending on your experience, qualifications, and valid certificates. Overtime is available at x 1.5 rate. Bank holidays are also paid at higher rate.

Amey has been working in partnership with Kent County Council since 2013, with a team of 150 operatives we deliver a full range of highways maintenance services from road and footway repairs and improvement schemes to gritting.

We provide 24-hour emergency cover for any incidents on the road network as well as investment in the highway’s infrastructure.

By investing in local infrastructure, we aim to improve the county’s highways, benefiting the community and people by keeping the towns and cities moving.

Highway Maintenance Operative plays an important part to help towns and cities moving. You will support in all aspects of highway maintenance works including routine and cyclical maintenance, minor civils’ works and the installation of low-speed temporary traffic management. In addition, you will have the chance to be involved in winter and emergency call out work.

The standard hours of work are 40 hours per week.

You will be responsible for:

  • Driving and operating vehicles/plant which require general and specialist skills; this duty includes daily vehicle/plant checks prior to shift starting, routine and cyclic maintenance activities such as EG oil and water checks etc.
  • Ensure the satisfactory completion of work in accordance with instructions and compliant with Amey’s Health and Safety At Work requirements, as well as Health and Safety legislation
  • Allocation and capturing time and resource utilisation in line with operated allocation system
  • Footway and carriageway patching, kerbing works, ironworks, minor civils’ works and drainage
  • Winter maintenance operations which includes undertaking winter and emergency call out and standby
  • Communicate and liaise with other employees of Amey, sub-contractors, the emergency services, the police, the general public, clients and customers

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • Valid driving license category C1 (7.5 ton)/HGV
  • CPC qualification
  • Enthusiastic, hardworking, and self-motivated individuals with experience working in a fast paced, arduous, outdoor environment
  • Ability to work under challenging weather conditions
  • Effective team worker with good communication and problem-solving skills (ToolBox Talk)
  • Ensure the satisfactory completion of work in accordance with instructions and compliant with Amey’s Health and Safety At Work requirements

Ideal candidate will hold valid and clear C1 driving license and CPC qualification with experience within the highway maintenance, street work or groundwork maintenance.

In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have NRSWA accreditation to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
