Job title: Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Dorset

About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be working within the Allocated Design Team & surrounding SME’s, the Engineer - Mechanical Designer’s main role will be Delivering Mechanical Design solutions and taking ownership of delivery.

The team will explore and test the problem space thoroughly, before generating our own hardware solutions and be prepared to lead the presentation of these ideas at design reviews and group critiques drawing on more senior member’s knowledge as required.

Within QinetiQ, we support numerous Domains, such as Aircraft Modification and Ship design. Each Team will have unique engineering specialities & focusses. The individual will have gained notable experience in the domain specific technical skills of a complex nature – E.g. FEA, CFD, Thermal Analysis, compliance, etc.

What I will be doing.

Reviews

Lead on PDR's / CDR’s and able to explain the thinking behind concepts at Design Review/PDR/CDR with confidence; presenting at design critique sessions & chairing engineering reviews with Manufacturing & Procurement communities.

Delivery

Balance conflicting requirements to come up with an optimal solution.

Uses influencing skills to drive the customer down the requirements funnel

Articulates assumptions, exclusions and Risks clearly and manages throughout project lifecycle

Ties down concepts so that they are clear, can be estimated from & enable change management

Leads on design thinking activities, undertakes activities to increase empathy without supervision.

Submit estimates directly to project & track the team's spend & holds the team to account for staying on track.

Fundamentally understands project finances & how money flows between areas using timesheets & aware of different booking code types; Able to approach estimating from different angles.

Drives and sets a sense of pace & sense of urgency within the delivery team.

Actively manages SME’s to deliver successfully, can manage conflict & is comfortable being wrong, Learning from Experience.

Ensures Risk assessments are in place for survey activities; may be off site / abroad (May be hot climate, cold weather, working at height, confined spaces, noisy etc.).

Clearly plans the work and establishes the baseline state from which any assumptions are made.

Drives the TDP content from a Design & Manufacturing P.o.V.

Negotiates with PM & knows the value of recording change & gaining agreement.

Can handle model complexity whilst maintaining config control rigour, managing interdependencies.

Understands the 7 wastes & uses them in daily delivery.

Technical

Experienced in designing complex systems and components likely to be required for test or operations.

Undertakes independent inspection of work to defined standards; Applies measurement to inform their clean thinking / scientific approach to problem solving

We would expect the individual to demonstrate curiosity, a willingness to learn and fail & persevere.

Uses knowledge of CAD features to integrate with analysis tools & can apply CAD software creatively - to solve novel problems

Can advise a delivery team on materials and available local manufacture methods for different delivery strategies

Supervise others' work in design activities – sharing knowledge & best practice

Governance

Can play an active role in FMEA.

Input to HazID, Compile compliance evidence & forms compliance Demonstration.

Review Local Test Procedures.

Assesses the loads imparted on systems and equipment under theoretical, operational and test conditions.

Holds Technical Lead LCM 1 delegation.

Drawing check Sig & Release sig (HCC2 Drawings); with a Deep understanding and experience of Tolerancing & dimension styles.

What do I need?

HNC/HND/Degree in Aeronautical, Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or Product Design (or equivalent experience)
Experience Designing Technical Hardware solutions – Ideally from a regulated industry requiring complex problem solving, precision tolerances or specific domain knowledge
Significant experience creating technical drawings from 3D Models, working with suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and subject matter experts.
Significant experience creating concepts & generating solution ideas and exposing those ideas to critique
Deep understanding of budgets, group behaviour, patterns of behaviour & using this to deliver to time, quality & cost
Knowledge & understanding of engineering fundamentals - formal training or experience in engineering subjects such as materials, stress awareness, mechanism designs, design principles, electrical awareness etc.

Desirable Qualifications: -

Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design degree or equivalent
Example GCSE’s – Maths, English, Science, Technology, Business Studies.
Example A ‘Levels – Science, Design & Technology, Art, Business Studies, Physics, Maths
Should have achieved CEng Level against the UK SPEC and have joined a recognised institution
