Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is the independent regulator for work-related health and safety in Great Britain. This is a fixed term appointment, for up to 23 months, with the option to complete a Level 3 Business Administration or Team Leader, or Level 5 Leadership and Management apprenticeship during the course of this appointment.

This is a development role so to be eligible to apply, the training and development you receive must provide you with significant new skills and learning. This is an essential requirement for apprenticeship funding and means you must not already be fully qualified or significantly experienced in the type of work associated with the chosen Apprenticeship programme.

We are looking for individuals with excellent organisational and communication skills, to effectively manage delivery of a broad range of administrative support functions who are keen to become strong leaders.

Please note that there is an option to work part time with a minimum of 3 days per week without the apprenticeship element.

Job description

As an Operational Support Team Leader, you will provide leadership, management and direction to a team of operational support staff.

You will work closely with your Senior Administrative Manager, local Heads of Operations and regulatory colleagues across operational divisions to understand and support delivery of inspections and investigations in accordance with the yearly HSE workplan.

We are seeking candidates with strong communication and leadership skills. You will have experience of working with others, delivering at pace, managing a quality service, and making improvements to service delivery.

You will be responsible for ensuring adherence to agreed deadlines, and completion of regular and timely data quality checks, managing and mitigating risks given essential GDPR considerations.

As a line manager, you will lead and proactively engage in personal and team development and performance management.

Regular weekly attendance will be required at your chosen office location, with possible travel to nearby offices.

You will work closely with your Senior Administrative Manager to lead and motivate operational support staff, encouraging consistent high-quality service delivery. Manage, develop and support teams and individuals by:

  • Driving a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and high performance. Building the capability of staff through development, training, and support.
  • Ensuring clarity of roles, responsibilities, and standards for all staff within your management command.
  • Coordination of resource to support essential office-based tasks, keeping workloads and resources under constant review to ensure business priorities are understood and met. Identifying potential business risks, appropriately escalating as required.
  • Developing and sustaining contacts outside your immediate team, identifying opportunities to share knowledge, information and learning.
  • Ensuring that local arrangements are in place for office security, secretariat, business continuity, health and safety and liaise with facilities management and HSE's estates teams as appropriate.
  • Consistent application of performance and attendance management procedures. Taking timely formal disciplinary and informal action as necessary with the support of your Senior Administrative Manager.
  • Responding positively to change. Demonstrating and promoting positive behaviours reflecting the values set out in the Civil Service Code, challenging behaviours and attitudes when required.
  • Proficient in the use of all Microsoft Office packages including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, with the ability to report and analyse data in Excel.
  • A good working knowledge of SharePoint and COIN would be desirable.
