Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen in the child death review team for a new member of an existing team. The post holder will be required to work collaboratively with colleagues across a wide range of multidisciplinary teams including medical and nursing, in hospital and the community, primary care, social services, police, education and the voluntary sector.
The post has 2 elements to it; child death review (main part of role) and bereavement support when there is capacity within the service.
Main duties of the job
Child Death Review: This is a specialist role that requires a high level of expertise to deal with highly complex information and situations as well as contributing to the extensive information gathering, analysis in order to analyse the circumstances surrounding the deaths - including the care that was provided - to identify any modifiable factors, identify trends, safeguard children and where possible prevent future deaths. The post holder would be part of an on call rota as one of the Joint Agency Response Clinicians as defined in Working Together (2018). The role entails liaising with senior professionals in Social Care, Police and the Coronial Service, undertaking home visits to the family and chairing health led multi agency case discussions.
The post holder should be adaptable and flexible and be able to work outside of normal office hours including being on call 7am to 7pm and at weekends as part of a rota as required to support the service.
Bereavement Support: The post holder will work alongside the well-established child bereavement team delivering the key worker role as defined in When a child dies (2018) when there is capacity in the service.
Provide emotional and practical follow up support for the family.
Ensure high quality, evidence–based care is offered to grieving families identifying the common issues which affect the quality of care for dying children and their families.
Working for our organisation
The post holder will work as part of a small, dedicated team that has been established in the Nottingham Children's Hospital and Kings Mill Hospital since 2008.
The team are commissioned to provide that strategy child death review for every child death (up to the age of 18 years) within Nottingham City and County as well as providing information for out of area CDOPs. As well as providing the on call joint agency response alongside police and social care for a sudden child death.
The team work closely with clinical teams providing the care and external agencies such as police, social care, coroner, hospices and charity groups.
The team provide each other with peer support and advice. The team have access to a counsellor monthly, due to the nature of the work and the impact it can have on the professionals involved.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You should have experience of working with children and families within a multi-professional team at a senior level (band 6) as well as being able to evidence post graduate qualification or an equivalent level of knowledge.
You should have the ability to analyse information quickly and thoroughly and to act upon the findings and have highly developed assessment skills in challenging and distressing situations.
You will need to have highly developed and clear, effective communication skills including empathy in order to work with families, children and young people and other professionals, often in extremely distressing circumstances.
You should also be able to provide an appropriate level of support to other professionals who may never have dealt with the death of a child and work effectively across agencies and disciplines.
You are required to have excellent organisational and time management skills in order to achieve performance targets in an unpredictable work load. You will need to be able to work autonomously as well as in a team.
You will be able to provide evidence of assertiveness skills and an ability to plan, implement and evaluate.
