Job Description

JOB TITLE: GEOSPATIAL DATA SCIENTIST

REPORTS TO:
DIRECTOR MODEL DEVELOPMENT

DEPARTMENT:
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

HIRING CODE: M10

Company Details

Risilience is seeking to employ a Geospatial Data Scientist to join us in our mission to help businesses manage environmental risks and climate change – the two biggest systemic threats facing the economy, now.

We have developed a unique modelling and analytics platform, founded on more than a decade of influential frameworks pioneered by Risilience’s founders at the Centre for Risk Studies at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School, to help international corporations assess and navigate the risks and opportunities presented by the transition to a low-carbon, nature-positive economy.

Our SaaS solutions help companies produce climate- and nature-related analytics to navigate their pathway to net zero and sustainable business practices, through science-based cost benefit comparisons of emission reduction strategies versus their risks.

The Risilience client base comprises a growing list of globally recognised brands, including Nestlé, Burberry and Reckitt. The pedigree of our solutions is supported by our deep academic and science-based roots and the close ties we maintain to the Cambridge Centre for Risk Studies.

Our business received Series B funding earlier this year and is growing rapidly. Benefits include competitive basic salary, bonus, pension, flexible working (will need to be office based two days a week), and a commitment to staff diversity.

Role Details

This role will be part of the model development team and based in our Cambridge office, however we do support flexible/hybrid working and can look at applicants based outside the area. You will use your geospatial data science expertise to help us develop and expand our modelling of climate and nature-related risks and opportunities.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing geospatial data in a way that is efficient and easy to query
  • Developing geospatial databases and datasets
  • Analysing geospatial data in combination with other data produced by Risilience
  • Producing maps that illustrate the results of analysis in an attractive and easy-to-understand way
  • Working with our software development team to integrate maps produced into our SaaS platform

This will involve working closely with our physical and transition risk climate modellers, natural capital experts, product managers and client solutions teams. You will be able to research and source relevant geospatial datasets and help develop analytical and modelling methods to assess and quantify the probability, consequences, and financial impacts of risk scenarios on businesses and economic sectors. You will work on innovative scientific approaches to quantify risk and support strategic business decisions.

You will support our product development, integrating your work into our existing model framework, and support our client delivery team in communicating technical models, methodologies, and outputs externally.

Essential Skills

  • Experience managing big geospatial datasets
  • Data engineering
  • Data visualisation using GIS
  • Proven ability of analysing geospatial and tabular data in modelling languages (Python preferred but other languages may include R, MatLab, SQL)

Desirable Skills

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in natural or social sciences, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline
  • Experience in using Cloud services (e.g. AWS)
  • Knowledge of quantitative analytical and statistical methods and their application to risk and real world problems (for example: probability theory, machine learning, catastrophe science)
  • Expertise in a topic related to climate change, such as physical risk science, economics and finance, technology, etc
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to learn new topics and develop innovative solutions
  • Research experience and an ability to source information and organize and interpret datasets
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex scientific topics and analyses to other non-expert teams
  • An interest in climate change and environmental risk
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage concurrent goals, and work closely with a diverse team of scientists and engineers

Risilience is committed to a proactive approach to equality, which supports and encourages all under-represented groups, promotes an inclusive culture and values diversity. Entry into employment is determined by personal merit and by the application of criteria required for the post. No applicant for an appointment or member of staff will be treated less favourably than another on the grounds of sex (including gender reassignment), marital or parental status, race, ethnic or national origin, colour, disability (including HIV status), sexual orientation, religion, age or socio-economic factors.

Adjustments will be made, wherever reasonable to do so, to enable applicants to compete to the best of their ability and, if successful, to assist them during their employment.

We encourage applicants to declare their disabilities in order that any special arrangements, particularly for the selection process, can be accommodated. Applicants or employees can declare a disability at any time.
