Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity to join a friendly surgery team. Our current phlebotomist is retiring at the end of July 2023 and we hope that the new post holder will have the opportunity to shadow her for at least a week.

The job is based at our Broughton Surgery site and will be for 2 or 3 mornings per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) starting at 8.30am and working until 12.30pm.

A friendly manner, particularly the ability to put people at ease, alongside speed and efficiency is required.

Job Summary

Working under the direct supervision of the GP/Lead Nurse and strictly in accordance with specific Practice Guidelines and Protocols, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP / Hospital Consultant.

Venepuncture

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Checking patient identification against GP request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with Practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff
  • Notifying the GP/Nurse of any significant patient issues
  • Liaising with and assisting members of the administrative team

Other clinical tasks

  • Undertake blood pressure checks, sitting and standing if the patient is unable to use the waiting room machine or another clinical member of staff has requested you to do this
  • Measure and record the patient’s height and weight if requested to do so.
  • Train to carry out other clinical tasks if requested to do so.

Job Types: Part-time, Permanent
Part-time hours: 8 per week

Salary: £11.00 per hour
