As the Catalyst Scientist you will provide technical expertise on the development of next generation fuel cell and electrolyser catalysts. This role will include investigation of catalysts with consideration given to support required development and scale-up activities.
You will work in the technology team, supporting the Global Catalyst Technology Manager with the development and scaleup of advanced catalyst materials.
Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells is a customer focussed, global business dedicated to the supply of high-performance fuel cell catalysts and components. The business, which is headquartered in Swindon, is a leader in its chosen markets with rapidly growing sales supported by its extensive R&D and manufacturing capabilities.
Your responsibilities:
  • To develop and analyse the results from in-situ and ex-situ experiments to understand underlying catalyst properties critical to performance and durability.
  • To interpret Electrochemical performance and durability tests and report findings to the Global Catalyst Technology Manager and wider technology team.
  • Planning and performing experiments in line with project requirements.
  • To carry out catalyst development and scale-up activities with a focus on how new designs will be incorporated into a volume manufacturing environment.
  • To undertake development activities within a technology and volume manufacturing environment including handling and characterisation of materials in a safe and controlled manner.
  • To plan and carry out work in accordance with business priorities including processing, interpreting and disseminating results.
  • Work with the technology team to develop next generation catalyst designs
  • To carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Requirements for the role:
  • Degree level or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering.
  • Proven ability to design and undertake experimental work, process data and use analytical skills to interpret the results.
  • Understanding of the properties of materials applicable to fuel cell catalyst layers (catalysts, catalyst materials, ionomers).
  • Experience working within a manufacturing environment, preferably with experience of high volume manufacturing. (Desirable)
  • Experience testing and analysing data related to fuel cell membrane electrode assemblies (Desirable)
