The Units have a progressive approach and are supported by Band 7s, Quality Improvement Leads, and a Matron for Adult Critical Care. There are a wide array of career pathways to take and opportunities to develop additional skills. Adult Critical Care is committed to providing the highest quality of care and maintaining consistently high standards in a professional and friendly atmosphere. New staff will be allocated two mentors and will have a period of supernumerary time and an abundance of teaching and support. All new starters will be based on one of the Critical Care areas and then are expected to rotate from their base area to other units for development purposes.

Full time hours are 37.5 per week for non-medical posts subject to the new terms and conditions brought in under Agenda for Change.

Working for our organisation

A 29-bedded recently expanded Intensive Care Unit which facilitates the treatment of seriously ill patients with failure of one or more organ systems. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, renal, respiratory, major trauma, hepatobiliary, spinal, vascular, ENT, maxillofacial, general medical and general surgical.

Surgical High Dependency Unit (HDU/Ward E12)

A 20-bedded Critical Care area which facilitates the care of patients who require high dependency nursing. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, renal, respiratory, major trauma, hepatobiliary, vascular, spinal , ENT and maxillo-facial surgery.

Critical Care Department (CCD)

A 17 bedded purpose built unit comprised of intensive care and high dependency beds. Specialities catered for include: thoracics, burns, haematology, oncology, gastroenterology, renal, upper GI surgery, respiratory, general medical and surgical patients.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:-

Accountability for the safe, effective delivery of high clinical standards of care and patient satisfaction

Assess the care needs of patients and develop a programme of care which is evaluated and amended as appropriate

Embrace and promote trust values and behaviours required to deliver an excellent patient and staff experience, ensuring patient satisfaction and staff retention.

Share knowledge and learning with peers and students using skills in mentorship and clinical supervision to ensure competencies are maintained.

Using effective communication with patients and relatives to maximise productivity as well as maintain high standards of patient led care.

You will be required to work variable hours in order to lead the service including nights, evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

  • Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation
  • Able to undertake patient manual handling manoeuvres and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres
  • Competent and capable of using medical equipment
  • Management of complex critically ill patients e.g. prone positioning, patient transfer

The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£41.90 for enhanced and £21.90 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay).
