We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Critical Care to join our friendly, expert and energetic team and to actively contribute to the development of our services.

We are a CQC “outstanding” rated critical care department looking to expand our consultant numbers to a total of 16 critical care consultants, providing leadership to our critical care team.

Applicants should possess a Certification of Completion of Training in critical care with a base speciality of anaesthesia, acute medicine or emergency medicine. We would welcome interest from applicants with a single CCT in critical care and we can design a bespoke job plan dependent on individuals’ clinical interests/ circumstances.We would also consider applicants without a CCT in critical care provided they have suitable experience in critical care and wish to undertake regular sessions in critical care as consultants.

Our critical care department is one of the busiest in the South East of England with approximately 2000 admissions per year, and comprises a 14-bedded level 3 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and a 10-bedded level 2 High Dependency Unit (HDU).

  • Holistic consultant critical care services to our local population with the opportunity to help develop our CQC rated “outstanding” service, including critical care rehabilitation, research, education, and point of care ultrasonography
  • To participate in the critical care consultant on-call rota (currently a single 1:12 rota but will move to a dual 1:8 rota following expansion of the consultant workforce)
  • To provide additional consultant clinical services dependent on the dual specialty (anaesthesia, ED and Acute Medicine) and work to develop these specialties
  • To undertake Quality improvement activity/ clinical audit to continually deliver high class clinical care and to participate in the Trust’s governance processes.
  • Supervision and teaching of medical students, nursing and trainee medical staff
We have an integrated multi-disciplinary consultant-led post-critical care rehabilitation service comprising a critical care counsellor, physiotherapists, rehabilitation nurse, and occupational therapists. We have an active critical care research unit with an extensive portfolio of national and international trials and are a FICM-recognised unit for ICM trainees and have 4 trained Advanced Critical Care Practitioners supporting our trainee rotas. We are currently training a further 4 ACCPs. We invested in an electronic patient records system in 2013 which we use to facilitate quality improvement and high quality audit.

The ICU and HDU are currently led by 10 consultant anaesthetists with an interest in critical care and two dual-certified medical consultants.

Our ED was rated “good” by the CQC in June 2022 and has benefitted from a £20 million refurbishment completed in July 2021. The department sees 140,000 patients per year and has an enthusiastic team comprising 11 full time Consultants (increasing to 16), two part-time Consultants, 3 ST4-ST6 trainees in Emergency Medicine, 15 Specialty Doctors, 8 Specialty Doctors for Children’s ED, 4 ACCS ST1-3 trainees, 4 ST1-2 trainees in General Practice, 7 FY2 trainees, 2 FY1 trainees, Clinical Trust Fellows (part-time Sim/ Medical Education), Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP), Physician Associates (PA), Matron and Team of Nurse Lead Managers, Consultant Nurse, and 190 nursing workforce.
