Job description
You will play an important role in planning for, responding to, and recovering from flood and environment incidents in Kent, South London and East Sussex (KSLES).

You will primarily support activities in the Training and Exercising portfolio, to enhance our incident management (IM) service, ensuring that our duty officers have the capability and confidence to respond to incidents. You will also support our Emergency Planning portfolio providing an opportunity to work with Partners.

Each incident is different, and each day in the Area Incident Team is different. Working with the team, you can expect to:
  • maintain our incident rooms and systems
  • develop and deliver duty officer training that is accessible, inclusive, innovative and seeks to achieve our sustainability goals
  • lead on specific incident management systems
  • ensure KSLES remains resilient by promoting duty officer succession planning and creating duty officer rosters in advance
  • support incident debriefs and identify areas for improvement
  • support emergency planning and business continuity management
  • work with external partners that form Local Resilience Fora
  • work closely with staff at all levels across the area and within National directorates to share best practice and learn from others

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The team
The Area Incident Team coordinates and assures our IM activities in KSLES, ensuring that we are ready to respond to all types of incidents to protect communities and the environment, fulfilling our role as a Category 1 responder.

Working closely with Local Resilience Fora partners to assess IM risks and plan accordingly, helping our incident responders to become trained and capable to perform their roles.
Experience/skills required
You will be a natural problem solver, delivering suitable solutions by exploring several options to meet the needs of internal and external customers. You will need to be agile in your approach to how you work and be able to adapt quickly to dynamic situations.

We are looking for an individual with:
  • good written and verbal communications skills
  • organisational skills with prioritising your time to what matters most
  • ability to work on own initiative, and collaboratively to make decisions and achieve joint outcomes
  • ability to deliver at pace by planning, tracking, gathering and maintaining data/information.
  • communicating effectively with a range of internal and external customers whilst maintaining those relationships

Ideally, but not essential you will have an understanding of:
  • the role and responsibilities of the Environment Agency as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies
  • the incident management cycle
Contact and additional information
Your base location can be any KSLES office. You will need to be able to travel regularly to our incident room at our West Malling office. There will be occasions when working from an office location will be essential and other occasions optional with home working.

Interviews will be held face-to-face or via MS Teams during June.
