Job Description

Peterborough City Council has declared a climate emergency and has committed to supporting Peterborough to become a net zero carbon city. To achieve this, all our residents, businesses, community groups and other organisations will need to make behavioural changes. The council has a key role in educating our communities on climate change and empowering them to take meaningful carbon reduction actions. The Climate Change Public Education Officer will be a vital part of this work.

This role is an exciting opportunity to work with our local communities, organising and delivering climate change training to groups such as businesses, schools, Parish Councils, faith groups, charities, community groups and other organisations. Strong communication skills and a passion for the environment and climate action would be needed when engaging with members of our communities. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact to city wide carbon reductions.

Peterborough is a unique combination of a New Town with a historic medieval core that has ambitious plans for the future. It is currently experiencing considerable investment in the city centre, including the opening of the University campus, along with the growth of new urban extensions on the edge of the city. Plans to revitalise the train station quarter will offer a positive welcome for every visitor.

Located on the East Coast Main Line and having an enviable cycleway network, you are able to travel to and around Peterborough in a sustainable way. We wear our green credentials proudly and are committed to projects to ensure that Peterborough becomes a net zero carbon city.

Our smart new offices are based at Fletton Quays and we can accommodate a high level of remote working due to a paperless, agile working framework. The successful candidate will benefit from a flexible working practice, cycle to work schemes, options to purchase extra annual leave, staff discounts and subsidised gym membership as well as a generous local government pension.

The successful candidate will need to be able to travel to deliver training at locations across the city. The role will require flexible working hours and the successful candidate will likely deliver training at evenings and/or weekends to suit the availability of trainees.

Full time or part time options are available; please state what your desired contract hours would be.
Fixed Term Contract until 31/03/2025.
For an informal chat, please contact Hannah Swinburne by email via hannah.swinburne@peterborough.gov.uk.

We are proud to serve the diverse communities of Peterborough and want our workforce to reflect this diversity, which we believe is beneficial for our employees, the organisation and the communities we serve.

Appointment to this post will be subject to the outcome of an Enhanced Disclosure obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
